Obviously, I type too fast for liveblogging.

collin

The opening was more than a little uncomfortable--Stewart seems like a fish out of water, and when they show the audience reactions, I can practically see the thought balloons reading "This guy's a lot funnier when he's making fun of *other* people..."

cgb

Dylan

Agreed, Collin. He's been much better since towards the end of it though.

collin

It looks like Naomi Watts got Bjork's dress *after* "Cheney shot her." What is that?

Dylan

Is it just me, or does Naomi Watts always look stoned ever since she did 21 Grams?

Lori

He'll catch his stride...I hope.

I'm blogging too, btw.

collin

Yeah, I agree. I've always disliked the long opening--it almost always ends up coming off like watered down standup, and that's not Stewart's strength. I think he used the break to collect himself a little and get back to what he does well...

aldahlia

I missed the fuck. Gotta love Ms. Bonham Carter.

collin

Umm...Jane Austen would surely nod in approval?!

collin

Here's what I'd like to see: Will Farrell and Steve Carell arm wrestling backstage to decide which of them is going to change the pronunciation of his last name so that it rhymes with the other's.

Dylan

Yes, we are full of the pompacity tonight, Collin.

collin

Care-ul and Fuh-rell would have been even better without the last 15 seconds of calling attention to the joke. But hey, at least they made sure that the last. person. in. America. who wasn't aware of the joke now knows. Whew.

Lori

I just can't summon the love for Steve Carell.

Dylan

Lori, you should really give the Office a chance, then. It's pretty genius.

collin

I'll second that. Carell is genius, but only in a particular kind of role--something that the producers of the Daily Show (and the Office) understood much better than, say, those of the 40 Yr Old Virgin.

Dylan

40 Year Old Virgin is underrated.

collin

Agreed about Bacall--I was just going to write that I could watch her and Morgan Freeman hand out all the awards.

But that was tough to watch. Did she not get the lines ahead of time?

Lori

No, I hate the American version of The Office. Can't watch it. Can only watch the British version. Don't care what you say. Can't make me! Can't make me!

collin

The campaign commercials were the highlight of the show thus far.

Dylan

Without a doubt.

Lori

yeah, and that's not saying much (the commercials being the highlight).

The gay cowboy montage opening is my favorite part so far...if oly because it was a bit edgy.

collin

I like this song all right--it reminds me a lot of Aimee Mann--but I'm totally distracted and put off by the Burning Car Interpretive Dance Troupe.

collin

You want edge? Putting Keanu on a show recognizing excellence in film: welcome to the EDGE, baby!

Lori

Yeah, I didn't like the dancers. But I totally dug the burning car.

Fire! Fire!

Dylan

Agreed. A bit much, but I was a bit distracted by wondering who the singer was. She also had a recent guest role on "In Justice" which is about as good as can be expected from something staring Kyle MacLaughlin.

Dylan

Genius, Collin.

collin

And the award for Most Self-Conscious Hair Flip by a Presenter goes to...

Dylan

Only slightly better than Frances McDormand's nose scratch.

collin

Teleprompter:

Once again, [flip hair right] here are the nominees [adjust dress strap] for Original [flip hair left] Score...

Lori

I thought MY night would be building to a much bigger climax too...maybe I'll go make a sandwich.

aldahlia

So, did anyone understand what the French guy said?

Dylan

I didn't, V. Sorry.

collin

They just can't leave the piracy stuff alone, can they? Hell, even Jake realized what a TOOL he sounded like, while he was reading their lines for them. Half of the movies they're showing haven't been "on the big screen" in some time.

Dylan

Besides, my big screen at home is just as good as going to the theatre... and I can do it in the nude.

aldahlia

Back the Future made the jump when the 20 year anniversary DVD set came out.

collin

When they're forced to repopulate the earth, by the way, I'm pretty sure that they'll start with Albania.

collin

Meryl Streep sounds drunk.

Dylan

We coudl do this all night, Collin. I set 'em up, you knock 'em out.

aldahlia

That's because Streep is Good at what she does.

collin

You're right. I think Tomlin is hugely underrated, too.

aldahlia

MASH works so well today, especially in the last few years, that I think you took some of his peyote.

Dylan

I don't know, but if you know where I can score some...

aldahlia

Not unless you wanna drive to OK.

collin

The memoriam seemed a little muted this year--I wonder if the sound got edited to try and work away from the applause-o-meter kind of stuff...

collin

Smith's bit was maybe the low point of the show. That was unbelievably lame.

Dylan

Worst moment of the show. Wait... the overly dramatic African director might have just topped it.

collin

I don't have anything to add to your comments re PSH. Good on them for recognizing him.

aldahlia

Two? I know about Pulp Fiction.. but... what's the other one?

Dylan

I'm pretty sure it was Saturday Night Fever.

collin

Battlefield Earth

Dylan

Right, but I discount that one because it was TOO realistic to reasonably be called acting.

aldahlia

Yeah, Battlefield Earth was genius. I mean, a movie with gold-stealing dreadlocked aliens from the planet Psyclo. That rules.

collin

Larry McMurtry may be the single nerdiest person I've ever seen on an Oscar telecast.

collin

Okay, I'm out. It's exhausting work, trying to care for 3 hours when the only awards I'm interested in are at the end...

Thanks for the liveblog, Dylan...

Summer

Tee hee -- I wore my STOP. HURTING. AMERICA. t-shirt tonight!

eRobin

I wish I had known this was happening! Nobody wanted to talk about the Oscars around here. I love J. Garner too. That trip recovery was brilliant.

Dylan

It was a good time around here. We'll do it again next year.
