I think I might have just figured something out...
Earlier this week, Arianna Huffington had some interesting statistics about cable news media coverage:
Here are the number of news segments that mention these stories: (from a search of the main news networks’ transcripts from May 1-June 20).
- ABC News: "Downing Street Memo": 0 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 42 segments; "Michael Jackson": 121 segments.
- CBS News: "Downing Street Memo": 0 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 70 segments; "Michael Jackson": 235 segments.
- NBC News: "Downing Street Memo": 6 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 62 segments; "Michael Jackson": 109 segments.
- CNN: "Downing Street Memo": 30 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 294 segments; "Michael Jackson": 633 segments.
- Fox News: "Downing Street Memo": 10 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 148 segments; Michael Jackson": 286 segments.
- MSNBC: "Downing Street Memo": 10 segments; "Natalee Holloway": 30 segments; "Michael Jackson": 106 segments.
Pretty troubling statistics. Natalee Holloway is much, much more important than the Downing Street Memo, at least according to television news.
Another note: Earlier this week, eRobin had a post about the troubling scientific discovery that girls are being born at a higher rate than boys than in past generations:
In 1942, the story tells us, the ratio of boys to girls born was 1055/1000. Sixty years later in 2002, that rate was 1048/1000. That's a .7% drop across sixty years.
With these two posts bouncing around my head today, I started to realize something: Maybe we should be concerned about all the missing white women lately. In the past, it wasn't as big a problem, because we knew where the white women were. We had tabs on them. But lately, they've started to slip through our fingers. But, now we know the reason: There's just to many of them to keep up with! We, as Americans, can't keep track of the white women anymore.
And the problem is just going to get worse. As the gap between male and female birthrates continues to widen, we are going to find ourselves losing more and more white women. So, the next time you see a story on the news about another missing white woman, remember that it's not an annoyance... it's an epidemic.

We need to put some kind of Lujack (sp) tracker in them. And do it fast because as the story points out, we're not only gaining girls, we're losing boys! Who's going to do all the fancy math that GPS requires if all we've got in the next 15,000 years is a bunch of girl babies to work with? Harvard will have to shut down ...

Yes, but at least we'll all be living in clean houses with three square meals a day on the table and a family raised with proper American values.

This is hilarious. It all makes sense now! There are just too many chiquitas walking around like they own the place. What we need to do is start exposing them at birth. Close call, though!

I'm just glad I realized what was going on before it was too late and all the white women just started running around the country all willy-nilly like, with no control or power to stop them!
