Two weeks ago, a grenade was thrown towards the President while speaking at Tblisi, Georgia. It was later reported that it was a dummy grenade, and that the Georgian security service swept up the device, but did not inform the US secret service until after the President had left. It was also reported that the President was never in any danger.
Today, the Secret Service has changed that report a little bit. CNN.com reports that things were not as we have been told:
"A hand grenade was tossed in the general direction of the main stage and landed within 100 feet of the podium," the U.S. Embassy statement said.
"From initial qualified inspection, this hand grenade appears to be a live device that simply failed to function due to a light strike on the blasting cap induced by a slow deployment of the spoon activation device," the statement said.
The report also mentions that President Bush was standing behind bulletproof glass, and would have likely been unharmed by the device, from 100 feet away. However, many people in the crowd would have been killed and injured.
That's how close we were to a major international crisis. I wonder why this isn't getting much play?

The Right's fondness for providing people with the illusion of security. What a crock!
You'd think that someone in his administration would get the point that people abroad just don't like him (not to mention a growing portion of the population in America).
